Pets are very useful. Not only do they provide buffs for their masters, they do a significant amount of damage as well.
In order to acquire a pet, you need to find a monster that can be tamed. Only certain species can be tamed. The best places to find potential pets are at Pet Island and Pet Hill (more information below.)
When you find a potential pet, you first have to attack it into submission. When its health bar reaches zero, there is a chance that its name will turn blue. This signifies that the pet can be captured; select the Capture Pet common skill from your shortcut bar, and right-click on the pet with the blue name. If you are not interrupted, you will successfully tame the creature and can then summon it from your Pets window (Shortcut X or ALT+X; you can also open your Character screen with C or ALT+C, and select Pets.)
There are 3 different types of pets which can be captured: Young Pets, Wild Pets, and Rare Pets. These types of pets vary in appearance as well as attributes.
These pets will have the "Young" prefix, and will start as a Level 1 Pet. No matter what the pet's level is, you must be a certain minimum level to summon it, determined by the species (e.g. a Level 1 Young Tiger can only be summoned at Player Level 45.) These pets tend to be stronger as they level up, which allows greater customization of the their attributes, but leveling them can take a long time.
These pets will have the "Wild" prefix, indicating that they have a set level range. These pets are higher levels than Young Pets when you first catch them, and thus require less leveling to be effective. The downside is that they tend to be weaker than Young Pets of the same level. Also, because you can only assign attribute points gained after the pet was tamed, there is less opportunity for attribute customization.
These pets have the "Rare" prefix, indicating that they are very strong and have a set level range. They are higher levels than Young Pets when first captured, and have respectable stats for their level. Like the Wild Pet, attribute customization is limited. When there is more than one color variation for a Rare Pet (which can be viewed in the Pet window by clicking the "M" for Manual) it will randomly be one of the color types.
Players can go to Pet Island (Level 10+) or Pet Hill (Level 70+) to capture new and unique pets. Keep your eyes open for Rare Pets, which sometimes appear after killing monsters of their species. These pets are likely to grow up stronger and have more skills.
To get to Pet Island you need to visit Cherry Yun in Luo Yang and select the "To Pet Island" option, or ask your Class Escort to teleport you there. On Pet Island you can find the following pets:
• Rabbit
• Turtle
• Swallow
• Hedgehog
• Dog
• Monkey
• Raccoon
• Wolf
• Squirrel
• Parrot
• Bat
• Mantis
• Crocodile
• Lizard
To get to Pet Hill you need to visit Cherry Yun in Luo Yang and select the "Go to Pet Hill" option. On Pet Hill you can find the following pets:
• Wild Unicorn
• Kangaroo
• Stegosaurus
• Rhinoceros
• Young Elephant
• Ferret
Keeping your pet fed is an important part of pet maintenance. If you don't feed your pet, it can die and lose Joy. Feeding your pet restores its HP, so be sure to keep plenty of pet food for battles. There are four different types of pet food (Meat, Grain, Greens, Insects) and each type of pet will only eat one of these.
The higher the level of the food, the more HP it restores. There are several ways to feed your pet: open the Pet Interface (X or ALT+X) and click Feed; right-click the pet and select Feed; or right-click the food from your inventory while the pet is summoned.
Besides their HP, pets also have a Joy stat. Pets will gradually lose Joy when they are summoned, and will lose a significant amount of Joy if they die. If your pet's Joy drops below 60 it can no longer be summoned, and its Joy must be increased with items before it can be of use to you again.
There are two different kinds of items that increase Joy. They can be bought from any Pet dealer. Unlike types of food, the same Joy items can be used for all species.
• Colorful Balls: Increases a pet's joy by 10.
• Yellow Sling: Increases a pet's joy by 2.
There are two ways to summon your pet. The first way is to open the Pet window, select the pet you wish to summon, and click the "Summon" button. The second way is to open your Skill window and drag the "Summon Pet" skill on to your shortcut bar. You can now press the hotkey assigned to the "Summon Pet" skill to summon your pet (the last pet summoned will automatically be chosen.)
While your pet is summoned, you can press the Rest button in the Pet window to recall your pet. It will be unable to help you in combat, but its Joy will not decrease.
Pet Growth
Your summoned pet will gain experience as they fight and kill monsters with you. After you kill a monster, you will see your pet's experience gain in the middle center of the screen, along with your own. When your pet levels up, you will be given 5 attribute points that can be used to increase your pet's attributes in the following areas:
• Strength - Increases Physical Attack
• Intelligence - Increases Spirit Attack
• Stamina - Increases Physical Defense and HP
• Willpower - Increases Magic Defense and MP
• Agility - Increases chance to hit, chance of critical strike, and reflexes.
Tip: When increasing your pet's attributes, be sure to take into consideration the type of pet you are using. If you are using a pet that has only physical attacks, there is no reason to add points to Intelligence.
When you capture a pet, you will see a table in your Pet window which shows the strengths and weaknesses of the pet. For example, if the pet gets a large amount of Strength from each Strength point spent on it, it is obviously a physical pet and putting points in Strength is a good investment. If the Intelligence rating were higher than the Strength rating, it would be a Spirit Attack pet, and thus putting points in Strength would be inefficient and a bad investment.
Players are limited to two pets when they start playing, which goes up to three after a certain level. If you have the maximum number of pets already, you will have to release one before you capture a new pet. To release a pet, simply select the pet you want to release from the Pet Window, click Free, and confirm your choice.
Pets are very helpful when fighting. Depending on the type of pet, your pet can damage enemies, cast buffs, remove negative status effects, restore your MP, and more.
Your pet will also have skills. There are two different types of Pet Skills: Manual and Automatic. Manual skills require you to click on the skill, while Automatic skills are used whenever the pet assists you in combat. All pets will have 0-5 skills when originally caught; they will also automatically learn more skills as they level. If you want to get a specific skill for your pet, you can go to Cherry Yun in Luo Yang to buy new skills. Pets may only have a maximum of one Manual skill and four Automatic skills. When adding a new skill, your pet has a chance to lose one of the old ones, so use good judgment when adding skills! As your pet levels up, more Automatic and Manual skill slots may open up.
