I've seen people with animal pets like grasshoppers, weasels and rabbits, and I'm wondering if they are the "fairy pets" that people talked about.
So... any idea how to obtain one? Is there any special technique to tame one or are they items that monsters drop?

kill many monsters, there is a slight chance that you will see one. no special technique.

The grasshopper, weasel, and rabbit; amongst others, are all archtype pets, and you'll see it in some cases be referred to as fairy pets as well. These aren't like the normal pets that you can catch and can only be gained when they appear, through certain special quests, or through special items.
As mentioned, they seem to have a better chance of appearing if you're grinding alot. However, I was just finishing some quest in Serene City, where I needed to kill 20 guys, and a bunny appeared in the west tower of Serene City. And usually you'll need to grind more than 20 mobs to get an archtype to appear. Maybe it's a collective thing and an area will spawn an archtype after a certain number of kills or something?
Archtypes are very worthwhile though. They give you more and better stats. They have skills(passive) that aren't available to normal pets.
One thing I'd like to mention is that, if you ever see a Shrimp, it has very low HP. I think like less than 50 HP; and little defense as well. Basically, I ran into one and killed it before I could catch it. Two hits and it was dead. So if you run into one, be very careful not to kill it.

Thank you both for the information!
So basically, finding a fairy pet is like hunting for a rare item, like, it depends on your luck, right? And when you're lucky enough to get one out, you need to get its HP to as low as possible and tame them like you normally do with normal monsters.
Thanks again!

Taekon - I have been lucky enough to find a couple of these rare pets!
While hunting you may see a 'tameable pet' with a kind of colored aura around it. It will run away when you try to attack it - but will stop when you go into the 'tame' mode.
I have gotten a rabbit, weasel and fox. I didn't know what triggered this/these to appear - Thanks AnAdolt for this info!
Sometimes you can find them for sale from player shops as well.
Anyone have a list of what types are available? We know about the weasel, fox, rabbit and grasshopper - anything else?

I found a scrimp last night, my capturing skill was not high enough. :(
I do have the hermit crab though, so you can add that one to list.

I have a fox hatched and using it as a pet. (On JinJer)
I have a weasel and rabbit egg.
I will look at the stats and see what they are. Not sure if they change like regular pets do or not?
JinJer seems to be the "luckiest" of my characters to find special eggs :p as she has found 3 (so far). Saje has found one other (weasel I think??).

@zwild Yeah, you need level 3 catching because the Shrimp is like level 24 or something like that.
Stats can vary on an archtype, just like a normal pet. I think the natural max for any single stat is 6. You can use that charm, that I think get from the Gift Package at level 25, to increase it even more. Best I've seen is +1 to all 3 stats and +2 to a single stat. So Hermit Crabs, Weasels, and Grasshoppers group give bonuses to STR, STA, and PHY. Frog and others group gives bonuses to SPR, STA, and PHY. I have a Bunny but there's no characters I want to use it on yet. Someone else can provide info for the bunny.

First, natural max is not 6. I have two fairy pet with 7 (not enhanced yet)
Second, stats dont depend on race. Any fairy pet has three out of four stats (STR, STA, SPI and PHY), they very randomly.

I just tamed my first Fairy Pet today (2 actually, 2 Weasels, heh)! The first one were lvl 21 and the other one was lvl 20, maybe all Fairy Pets are lvl 20+ and you need lvl 3 Taming Skill to capture 'em?

No. It depends on which monster does it come from. e.g. if you kill one lvl 16 spiny crab and it turns to a fairy pet, that pet will be lvl 16.

What if you didn't kill anything and it just appeared? I had a Bunny appear when I went to kill 10 impostors in Serene City.

 My pet egg was level 1, which in turn became a level 1 pet when hatched.
Heck my hermit crab is still not level 16 after 5 days, which is what the spiny crab was that the hermit crab turned into.;)

I think all pets start out as level 1, even archtypes. So unless you have some special pet; when you hatch yours, it'll be level 1.

When my first fairy pet appeared, my taming skill was still level 1 XD. I was extremely frustrated, I even used a little trumpet to try to get people to help me.
Then I started catching the monsters close by and got my taming skill to level 3. Took like 30 minutes D:.. I kept going back and forth to make sure the weasel is still there XD.

once in the stone cave while fighting a mob i saw the text "such and such npc is transforming into a <whatever!> hurry up and catch it!"
And it turned into a catch able fairy pet.
But that was a little dungeon, so maybe it works differently there.

Look at the mob type, it basically tells you the archetype you'll get. I generally grind alot simply because more chances for extra stat points and chance quests. Since I played melee archetypes were annoying to get with all their running then reach a certain point and run all the way back and get their HP to full. Anyhow I stopped playing CB quite some time ago and am undecided if I'll return in OB. It's a fun game and all but I have an insanely short attention span when it comes to MMORPGs. This game is heavily based on chance (for random chance quests...which give great money, archetype pets, demonized spawning kings, etc).
Dude u can get one by lucky

for lv40, the maximum chance quests would only grant 40 free stats points

So Chance quests that give stat rewards are limited by character level maybe? Just like how it is with mount levels. I think the same applies for pets but I haven't had a pet surpass my character in level so I can't confirm.

Pets can't surpass a character's level, just equal it.

Hopefully I'll find one in OB! lol Oh, and the other day I saw someone (level 17 I think) with a butterfly as a pet...where are the tameable butterflies?

They probably got from spinning the Lucky Wheel in the Token Shop. You can get it normally by turning something like 30 medals to the in-game Government Guild. I think you need to be a certain rank too.

Several of my characters have found archetypes running loose inside mobs, and I've been able to tame them. I've assumed that whoever created them didn't know what to do with them or got killed before they could tame them. Yesterday I saw an archetype created for the first time, and the newbie that created it promptly killed it. Talk about crying!

i have been lucky enough to find numerous arch pets and tamed them. I have found the stats to be random. I had two bunnies...one was great for tanks and physical attackers and the other would need to find a squishie to do much good.lol
The pets are a super addition to ur attribute points and as with other "normal" pets, they come in a variety of colors. Ive tamed a dark blue, but there are light blue, yellow, and green arch pets also. I hope this helps.
